Whether you are a planner or a 'play it by ear' kind of person I would thoroughly recommend making use of fast passes when you go to Walt Disney World.
The whole idea of fast passes can be very confusing so I thought I would put together the basics about what they are and when they can be booked in this post.
What Are Fast Passes?
According to the Walt Disney World website Fast Passes are:
It's important to make a note of which rides are in which tiers when planning as it can be very easy to forget!
" Disney FastPass+ service allows you to reserve access to select Walt Disney World theme park attractions, entertainment and Character Greetings in advance. There is no additional cost to use FastPass+ service―it is included with your theme park admission. "
To put that in simple terms that we can all understand what this means is that mostly every ride in the main theme parks have two queues a Stand By queue and a Fast Pass queue. If you rock up to a ride and just want to wait in the queue whatever the length then you will go into the Stand By queue. However, if you have booked a slot where you can essentially 'queue-jump' then you will go to the Fast Pass queue.
When Can You Book Them?
This really depends on where you are staying. If you are staying a Disney World Resort Hotel then you can book your allocated amount of fast passes for your entire trip 60 days in advance.
If you are staying off site in a villa or another hotel then you can book your allocated fast pass 30 days of the day you plan to visit each park - you cannot book your entire trip in one go.
You can begin making your selections at either 60 or 30 days at 12noon on the selected day.

Where Can You Book Them?
Bookings can be made through My Disney Experience - the app or the website. You can also make Fast Passes selections for the park that you are in at the designated kiosks for that park. You can only book the passes at a kiosk for a particular park that you are in but you can cancel any of the selections made, regardless of their location.
How Many Can You Have Per Day?
You are limited to three initial fast passes per day for a single theme park. You are not stuck with these choices however, these can be cancelled and other selections made at any point.
Each fast pass has an hour window which it can be redeemed in. If you are too early you won't get on the ride and you will also not be able to redeem the past if you are past the allotted time slot either.
Once you have used your three initial passes you will be able to make more selections - one at a time - until the park closes. Quite handy really.

Are There Rules?
Of course there are, things wouldn't run as smoothly if there were no rules! The rules are pretty simple - I have already mentioned a few of them above! One of the biggest things is that in some parks there is a tier system in three of the parks; Hollywood Studios, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. Basically what this means is that if two of the rides you want to do are both tier 1 then you cannot fast past both of them at the same time.
The rides in these tiers are as follows:
Hollywood Studios: Alien Swirling Saucers, Slinky Dog Dash, Toy Story Mania!
Epcot: Frozen Ever After, Soarin', Test Track, Illuminations: Reflections of Light, Epcot Character Spot!
Animal Kingdom: Flight of Passage, Na'vi River Journey!

Can They Be Changed?
Yes they can be. I have probably mentioned this above but you can cancel a fast pass to rebook a different one as you go along or in advance. I cancelled entire days when I was there as we moved around what days we went to the parks when we realised how warm it was going to be. It's very easy to do, just be prepared that you might not always get what you want if you cancel the fast pass.

There we go the facts surrounding fast passes in Walt Disney World - they are called Fast Pass+ in the parks by the way, just incase that was confusing anyone.
I plan on doing a post about my top tips on fast passes soon to let you know what I learnt when I was there in August, so keep your eyes open for that one.
