Travel Dreams - Washington DC

*Picture Taken From Stephen Fry's America Book*

Continuing on from last weeks travel dreams post - which you can see here - I wanted to tell you about another place that has made it on to my 'Travel Wish List' as I have taken to calling it. Next up is Washington DC - yes I am aware it is also in The United States but I have a fascination with the country being  2,680 miles wide how can you not be.

Why Washington DC?

This question is answered a little more simply. I have an obsession with American Politics - which was fueled even further by my obsession with The West Wing. Lets take a minute to leave reality and talk about what ifs, particularly what if you could do anything in the world. In a dream world I would have a law degree with my specialised area being the American Judicial System which would then allow me to forge a path into the complex, yet fascinating American legal system where I could hopefully end up in The White House - this is as a dream, we are all allowed to have them.

With my dream seemingly never coming reality I still have a desire to see the country's capital and all it has to offer. Even to stand outside the gates of The White House would take my breath away. So, I guess to answer the original question the main reason I want to visit Washington because I have an obsession with how the country is run and to see the central hub for the federal system would stun my little brain into another world.

History & Heritage

Where better to learn about the history and heritage of a country than in the country's capital city? The great thing about Washington DC is that there are 100's of free - or almost free - attractions that you can visit. There are far too many to mention here but I think some that draw me in the most are the Lincoln Memorial where I can stare up at the 16th President who accomplished so much - including guiding the country through America's bloodiest time, The Civil War - and of course The Library of Congress, not only is it a stunning building but it also has changing exhibitions and would be a fascinating learning experience.

I know it may not interest all but for me I cannot visit Washington DC without paying my respects at Arlington Cemetery - perhaps seeing the changing of the guard whilst I am there also. I have been very lucky to visit the graves of the fallen whilst I was in Normandy, France. It is something I feel everyone should see and should pay their respects at and for me Arlington Cemetery is a follow on to this for me.

Neighbourhoods

Washington DC has some of the most beautiful and fascinating neighbourhoods around - Georgetown and Dupont Circle to name a couple. There are lots of organised tours which you can read more about here. I just want to be able to explore the beauty and culture that each individual neighbourhood has to offer. It would a wonderful mixture of culture and beauty for all of those looking something a little different.

Your Opinion

Well there we have it, a few of the reasons that I am drawn to the beautiful city of Washington. It just appeals to me in every way and it is one of those places that I want to experience in my lifetime.

What are your opinions on visiting Washington DC? Have you been - if so where would you recommend? I am always looking for new things to add to my things I would like to see list and I would love to hear from you. Comment down below and let me know.
