As with everything in life, rescuing a dog from a shelter comes with many myths and people who have their reservations. Today I am going to dispel some of these myths the best I can.
There must be something wrong with them
Many people believe that if a dog has been put in a shelter it is because there is something wrong with them. This really couldn't be further from the truth. Most dogs like Molly end up in a shelter because their previous owners circumstances change and they are unwanted pets - an idea which makes me very sad - or because they have been abandoned. A shelter becomes a safe refuge for a dog where they can wait in safety for their forever family to come and rescue them.
I don't know their history - so they must be vicious
Yes it's true that you don't know their history but it doesn't mean that the dog is going to be vicious because of it. Once a dog has entered a new environment with a clearly defined pack and structure that is all they know and they will respond to that accordingly. Dogs don't dwell on their past if you don't - just love them as much as you can and that's how they will react.
Most shelter dogs are old - what's the point in rescuing them
Yes it's lovely and cute to have a puppy but some people don't have the time to train them. Taking on an older dog can be a lot less work as they usually come with the added bonus of being house trained, they walk well on a lead and they might know a few tricks. Never discount a dog because of their age they show as much love and affection as any younger dog.
What if they bring in disease
Shelters take care of their animals which means that they are vaccinated and usually neutered/spayed before you are able to take them home. The first things they do when they rescue a dog is ensure they are free of fleas and any skin conditions and if they are not they treat them accordingly. The dog which you take home is happy and healthy and ready to begin their brand new life.
They will never trust me
If you trust the dog you are bringing into your home completely and with an open heart you will be surprised to see how quickly they become your best friends. Dogs are resilient and full of boundless love. They will want to please you and make you happy from the moment they enter your front door so don't be worried that the trusting bond wont form because as soon as they know you're their forever parent it will already have begun.
