Ah highlighter, it's that one product I have such a love hate relationship with. Some days I love it and other days I just don't see the point in it - strange I know. That being said, it is still an aspect of make-up that I feel should be covered in my beginners guide so this is what we are going to look at this week
1. What Is Highlighter?
If applied correctly highlighter is one of those products that can add a special something to your face in a subtly way that nobody can pinpoint. The main goal is to achieve a dewy look on the skin like you have just moisturised. As you can tell from the blogging world around there are many extremes of highlighter - most choose a subtle look but others prefer a stronger shimmer.
2. Choosing The Right Highlighter
Now don't get me wrong if you want to wear multi-coloured highlighter then please go ahead, in fact send me pictures as I would love to see that but there are shades better suited to certain skin tones.
- Fair Skin Tones - icy pink or icy silver highlighters
- Medium/Olive Skin Tones - soft peaches/golden glows
- Dark Skin - rose gold/champagne/bronze
As I said these are only a guideline but it's good to have for a reference point.
3. How To Apply Highlighter
When considering highlighter application it's important to consider where it should go on the face. The main areas which we usually apply highlighter are:
- Cheekbones & Temples
- Blend on the highest point of your cheekbone and up towards your temple. The product can be applied with the same tool you used for your foundation to aid with blending. Applying it here will help draw attention away from any shadows made from contouring.
- Brow Bone
- Blend into the brow bone underneath the eyebrow and into the inner corner. It will open the eyes up and make them appear brighter.
- Cupids Bow
- For day to day make-up this isn't as common but it can add a beautiful effect to the lips. If you apply a small amount of highlighter on the cupids bow before your lipstick you will end up with a beautiful multi-dimensional effect when it is applied.
4. Type Of Highlighter
As with blushers which I have mentioned in my blushers post there are various types of highlighters available:
- Powder
- Cream
- Liquid - cushions (as in the picture)
- Stick
You can check out my blushers post to see which sort suits each skin type best - the same rules will apply here.
5. Things To Remember
A few things you should remember when it comes to highlighter:
- Less is more - try to be light-handed
- Don't use highlighter for coverage - just to highlight certain areas
- Apply your highlighter after your foundation
- Match the texture to the rest of your base products
- If you want to use a powder highlighter, set your foundation a little with a translucent powder first
- Blend well so everything looks flawless
There we have my beginners guide to highlighters - not too long and easy to follow I hope.
